On the Track

Once again, the past racing season was a sensational period on the track for South Australia’s leading thoroughbred nursery with many stakes winners coming off the farm highlighted by Group One winners Fawkner, Happy Trails and Go Indy Go, with all having returned in fine form this season looking to add future Group One success during the Spring.

With a host of other stakes performers such as Gamblin’ Guru, Angel Of Mercy and Essay Raider, the farm was really pleased with its results.

It was very rare for a week to go buy with a Mill Park Stud graduate not appearing in the results section and to have produced the winners of 80 races during the season was an amazing result for the all the team.

With our three Group One winners during the season adding to the impressive history of the farm, below is just a quick recap of their winning performances.

Getting the ball rolling was Happy Trails in the Group One Turnbull Stakes during the Spring. Bred and raised at the farm, Happy Trails was sold at the Adelaide Magic Millions Yearling Sale to trainer Paul Beshara for only $11,000.

Heading into the Turnbull Stakes off the back of three runs, Happy Trails with Dwayne Dunn in the saddle was simply too classy for his rivals, which included fellow Mill Park Stud graduate Fawkner who finished a very encouraging third.

Contesting the Group One W.S. Cox Plate at his next start, the narrowest margin of a half head separated Happy Trails from the winner Shamus Award (who had a massive weight advantage), but once again he ran enormously well for his connections and we couldn’t be happier for them.

Happy Trail’s dam Madame Flurry is due to foal this season to the Champion Three-year-old colt All Too Hard, having produced a colt by Bernardini last season.

Two weeks after the Turnbull Stakes, Reset gelding Fawkner, a yearling we sold at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale gave Mill Park Stud their second Group One victory in quick succession, winning the Group One Caulfield Cup over 2400m by a length and a quarter.

Next time out Fawkner stepped up again in trip to the 3200m for the first time in the Group One Melbourne Cup. Running a gallant sixth, Fawkner did all at Mill Park Stud very proud, being the first Australian bred horse across the finishing line.

After one run in the Autumn, the strapping grey resumed for his Spring assault. Off the back off an exciting, and narrow second place in the Group One Makybe Diva Stakes first-up, Fawkner headed to the Group One Caulfield Stakes over 2000m. Positioning just behind the leaders, the son of Reset was simply too good on the line, holding off the late charge of Criterion to win the race and cement his position as the Group One W.S. Cox Plate favourite, a race he will contest next time out.

Out of Group Three-winning, Group One placed Danewin mare Dane Belltar, Fawkner isn't the only stakes performer the mare has produced, with her first foal Tanby (Galileo) a winner of the Group Two Sandown Classic, while Red Ransom gelding Viking Star is also Group Two placed. To read more about Dane Belltar, head over to a recent story on the mare by clicking here.

The final Group One winner for the season was the two-year-old Bernardini filly Go Indy Go who had finished second at her first two starts, both at stakes level, before taking out the Group Three Sires’ Produce Stakes at Morphettville by a commanding three-and-a-quarter length margin. Sent to Sydney for the final leg of the Two-year-old Triple Crown, the Group One Champagne Stakes over 1600m, the Chad Schofield ridden filly was too good, defeating the Group Two VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes winner Zululand by a length. Trained by Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas, the Harry Perks bred filly is clearly one to watch as we head into the Spring and she steps up in distance.

Out of the Zabeel mare Elegant Eagle, Go Indy Go is a full-sister to another stakes winner achieved during the season in the Group Three winner Essay Raider. Due to foal to Medaglia d’Oro this season, the mare produced a filly by dual Group One Cox Plate winner So You Think last season..

What a Belltar...

Group One victories are the pinnacle of racing, and to see the Mill Park Stud graduate Fawkner back with his name in lights winning the Group One Caulfield Stakes, it is an outstanding achievement for all at Mill Park Stud.

While Fawkner’s story starts back way back on October 4 2007 when the Reset colt, the second foal from Dane Belltar was foaled, we have to go a little further back for the complete story.

An impressive looking grey herself, Dane Belltar was purchased as a yearling by trainer Leon Macdonald at the 2002 Adelaide Magic Millions Yearling Sale from the draft of Emirates Park for only $10,000.

Racing under the ownership of Steve Bennetts, Dane Belltar went on to record a pretty handy race record on the track, winning four times highlighted by a one-and-a-quarter length victory in the Group Three Lakewood Stakes (1800m) in Adelaide. Finishing third at Group One level at her next two starts in the Australasian Oaks to Rinky Dink and the South Australian Oaks to Dowry, Dane Belltar earned her connections just shy of $350,000 from her 31 starts.

Heading to Mill Park Stud as a broodmare under the same ownership, Dane Belltar went to Galileo in her first season, with the yearling going through the Mill Park Stud draft the Inglis Easter Yearling Sales where he was purchased by Nick Williams for $200,000.

Racing as Tanby, the gelding would prove to be a top class galloper on the track, netting connection nine wins and over $770,000 with his career highlight coming in the Group Two Zipping Classic (2400m), before finishing a gallant third in the Group One Australian Cup (2000m) two starts later, beating home his stablemate and Group One Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon.

Dane Belltar’s next foal, the then bay/brown colt by the unbeaten dual Group One winner Reset arrived at the start of October. Prepared from the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, the colt was purchased by Debbie Price, with the colt finding his way into the same ownership as his older half-brother Tanby.

Showing precocity and winning on debut by an impressive five lengths on debut with Nicholas Hall in saddle, a relationship that would extend well into both their careers, Fawkner finished in the top three in five of his next seven starts.

As a Spring four-year-old, Fawner won his first black-type race, defeating a handy field by four lengths, before backing that up three weeks later with another Listed victory, in fact this winning run was the start of the Fawkner we know today.

Making it three stakes wins on end with victory next time out in Group Three company at Flemington, Fawkner would go into the Group One Emirates Stakes at his next start on the final day of the Flemington Spring Carnival, and while he managed to find one better on the day, being beaten a short half-head, it was also a Group One quinella for Mill Park Stud with fellow graduate Happy Trails, who incidentally was foaled five days after Fawkner, claiming the race.

After a phenomenal one run Autumn campaign which resulted in a third behind World Champion mare Black Caviar over 1200m in the Group One William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley, Fawkner was spelled with aims at further Spring riches.

Starting his campaign in Sydney with two unplaced efforts, a third in the Group One Turnbull Stakes had him ready for the Group One Caulfield Cup (2400m), a race he duly saluted in, winning by over a length, defeating the international visitor Dandino.

Next time out Fawkner stepped up again in trip to the 3200m for the first time in the Group One Melbourne Cup where he ran a gallant sixth, being the first Australian bred horse across the finishing line.

Following a similar campaign again, he started in the Group One William Reid during the Autumn, and although officially finishing seventh, he was only two lengths from the winner Spirit of Boom.

First up this Spring, Fawkner almost caused an upset in the Group One Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m), finishing a half-head second to Dissident before heading the Group One Caulfield Stakes (2000m) second up. Settling just off the leaders, Nicholas Hall pulled the grey off the rail to make his challenge, taking the win by a long head from the fast finishing Criterion.

Now set to head to the Group One W.S. Cox Plate at his next start as one of the favourite runners with a possibly tilt at the Group One Melbourne Cup after that, all at Mill Park Stud wish Fawkner’s connections the best of luck!

Now after all the Fawkner excitement, let’s get back to Dane Belltar! Her third foal, by Bel Esprit was purchased at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale for $145,000 before also making his way to the same connections as his half-brothers. While not living up to what his brothers had done on the track, Revitalise as he was named, is still racing around in Queensland and has won on six occasions for his owners.

The next foal from the mare to race was the Red Ransom gelding Viking Star who was purchased by his trainer Leon Macdonald at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale in 2011 for $120,000. Having only had ten starts, and finishing out of the top three on four occasions, Viking Star was a narrow second in the Listed Hill Smith Stakes before an excellent third in the Group Two AAMI Vase behind Super Cool and It’s A Dundeel.

Dane Bellar’s next foal, a filly by Starcraft went to this year’s Inglis Easter Yearling Sale and made $650,000 to astute international judge David Redvers with the filly not only being the top priced yearling for the mare, but also for her sire. All at Mill Park Stud wait with excitement to see this filly hit the track.

The current yearling out of the mare is by New Approach who will be retained to race, and the mare has recently foaled smashing colt b Street Cry, in what will be unfortunately the last crop of the stallion after having been euthanised earlier in the season due to an illness.

All in all, Dane Belltar has had five yearlings go through the sale ring, earning her connections over $1.1m, not a bad outlay on the $10,000 she was purchased for as a yearling way back in 2002 and the near $350,000 she earned on the track

Cox Plate Next For Fawkner

Melbourne, October 11 - Last year’s Caulfield Cup winner Fawkner has a new goal this spring in the Cox Plate and he showed he was right on target for that when scoring a stylish victory in the Group I MRC Caulfield Stakes on Saturday.

The seven year-old Reset gelding was narrowly beaten last start in the Group I VRC Makybe Diva Stakes, but made no mistakes in this 2000 metre weight-for-age feature claiming a long head win over ATC Australian Derby winner Criterion.

“Every time I get on him he fills me with confidence,” said winning rider Nick Hall, who has rarely been parted from Fawkner in the last year or two.

A $70,000 purchase from the Mill Park draft at the 2009 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, Fawkner runs for Nick and Lloyd Williams and is prepared by Robert Hickmott.

“It was a wonderful ride and the horse is flying,” said Nick Williams.

“Dad’s taken his time with this horse and we’re seeing the benefit of that now.

“Hopefully we can win that elusive Cox Plate in two weeks time.”

Boasting the consistent record of 10 wins and seven placings from 24 starts with prizemoney topping $2.8 million, Fawkner was bred by Steve Bennetts and is a half-brother to stakes-winning stayer Tanby (also purchased and raced by Lloyd Williams) and stakes-placed Viking Star, being one of four winners from four foals to race for the good producer Dane Belltar.

A Group III winner by Danewin, Dane Belltar was a top class filly, placing in no fewer than three Group I Oaks events, so her success at stud should come as no surprise.

Dane Belltar has a two year-old filly by Starcraft that made $650,000 at Inglis Easter earlier this year for Mill Park when purchased by David Redvers Bloodstock.

She also has a yearling filly by English Derby winner New Approach (IRE) and has already foaled this spring delivering a colt by Street Cry (IRE).

MillPark Stud Graduates Clash in Caulfield Stud

Saturday’s $400,000 Group One Caulfield Stakes (2000m) is going to be a prime lead up run for two Mill Park Stud graduates as they head towards the Group One W.S. Cox Plate, set down for October 25.

In what is an outstanding field of 12 high class runners, nine of them being Group One winners, seven year old Reset gelding Fawkner heads to the race second up. After almost causing a boil over first-up with a nose second in the Group One Makybe Diva Stakes behind Dissident, last year’s Group One Caulfield Cup winner will be ridden by regular jockey Nick Hall for owners; Mr N C Williams, Mr L J Williams and Mrs S J Williams.

Purchased from the draft of Mill Park Stud at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, Fawkner is out of the Danewin mare Dane Belltar, herself a winner of the Group Three Auraria Stakes, as well as recording placing’s in the Group One Australasian Oaks, South Australian Oaks as well as the VRC Oaks.

With four foals to date having raced, all winners, Fawkner is not the only stakes performers, with Dane Belltar’s first foal Tanby (Galileo) a winner of the Group Two Zipping Classic, as well as a third in the Group One Australian Cup. Her second foal is Fawkner, while her third foal Revitalise (Bel Esprit) is a winner of six races and her fourth foal is the stakes placed Viking Star (Red Ransom).

With not much luck since, her most recent two-year-old is a filly (pictured below) by Starcraft that was sold at the 2014 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale to David Redvers for $650,000 – the top price yearling ever sold from the mare and also the highest priced achieved by Starcraft.

The other Mill Park Stud graduate set to take his place in the field is last year’s Group One Turnbull Stakes winner Happy Trails. Having contested last week’s Turnbull Stakes, not much went right for the classy chestnut in the run with trainer Paul Beshara suggesting the Cox Plate aspirant needed another hard hit out before his main goal this Spring.

With Damien Oliver set to be the new ridder for Happy Trails in the Caulfield Stakes, the $11,000 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale graduate is out of Madame Flurry, a 1000m winner by Perugino.

Last year’s Turnbull Stakes win was not the first at Group One level for Happy Trails, as he had won the Group Emirates Stakes during the 2012 Spring Carnival, a race where Happy Trails and Fawkner first met.

Having won three consecutive stakes races leading into the Emirates Stakes, Happy Trials prevailed by a short half head, defeating Fawkner. In fact they have raced each other only twice and only at Group One level with Happy Trails winning both of those clashes.. let’s hope for a dead heat on Saturday!

Thousand Guineas Test For Go Indy Go

Set to jump away as one of the favourite runners in Saturday’s Group One Thousand Guineas (1600m), Mill Park Stud graduate Go Indy Go, is looking to add another Group One victory to her already impressive resume.

A winner of the Group One Champagne Stakes (1600m) at her final start of her two-year-old season where she easily defeated the Group Two VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes winner Zululand by a length, Go Indy Go’s juvenile campaign had breeder Harry Perks stating “She really could be the best horse that I have bred.”

By Darley stallion Bernardini, out of the Zabeel mare Elegant Eagle, Go Indy Go isn’t the only stakes performer from the mare, with current four-year-old Essay Raider, a full-brother to Go Indy Go, also winning a stakes race the same day the filly tasted Group One success.

Elegant Eagle has a yearling filly by So You Think and has recently foaled a filly by Medaglia d’Oro, who is a full-sister to the current two-year-old out of the mare named Battle Brewing, who is yet to race.

Go Indy Go resumed in the Group Two Danehill Stakes down the Flemington straight, and while she did not perform as expected, she proved her class next time out in the Group Two Thousand Guineas Prelude over 1400m at Caulfield.  Settling back in the field, the filly flew late to finish third, beaten a length, indicating that the 1600m of Saturday’s race would be ideal.

With third acceptances take only a few days ago for the Group One W.S. Cox Plate (2040m), Go Indy Go was one of the final 41 acceptances and it would be an exciting thrill for all concerned to see the filly take her place in that race.

Prime Debut For Atalanta Miss

Adelaide, October 4 – Saluting in the very first juvenile race of the season in Adelaide on Saturday was smart Not a Single Doubt filly Atalanta Miss, a $55,000 Magic Millions Adelaide purchase for Prime Thoroughbreds from the draft of Mill Park.

Prepared by Patrick Payne, Atalanta Miss beat the favourite Sullivan Bay to win the 1000 metre dash by a length.

Bred by Brenton and Liz Parker, Atalanta Miss is the third winner from three foals to race from Rory’s Jester mare Our Greta, a daughter of Group I winner Silky Oak.

Game Second for Happy Trails

Melbourne, September 20 – Quality galloper Happy Trials showed he was getting back to his best with a fine second in the Group I MRC Underwood Stakes over 1800 metres at Caulfield on Saturday.

Fourth in the same race last year before winning the Group I VRC Turnbull Stakes and finishing second in the Cox Plate, the Paul Beshara trained seven year-old charged to the line to be beaten half a head by Foreteller.

“He's on track,” said his rider Michael Rodd.

“This race last year, he ran fantastic and he's done it again today.”

An $11,000 purchase for his trainer from the Mill Park draft at the 2009 Magic Millions Yearling Sale in Adelaide, Happy Trails has the overall record six wins and 14 placings from 41 starts with prizemoney of $2.1 million.

One of seven stakes-winners by Cornerstone Stud based sire Good Journey (USA), Happy Trails was raised at Mill Park for his breeders Brenton and Liz Parker and is the second foal of the Perugino (USA) mare Madame Flurry, a half-sister to stakes-winner Lake Villa and to the dam of Group III winner Royal Sash.

Madame Flurry has a yearling colt by Bernardini (USA) and was covered last spring by All Too Hard.

First Win For Frank Heavens

Adelaide, September 18 – Opening his account with a stylish win at Morphettville on Wednesday was improving three year-old Frank Heavens, a $150,000 Inglis Premier purchase from the draft of Mill Park.

Gelded after two runs as a juvenile when not beaten far behind stakes horses Get the Nod and London Lolly, Frank Heavens appreciated the step up to 1550 metres to dash clear and win by more than two lengths.

Prepared by Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas, Frank Heavens is by Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown (USA) from well related Carnegie (IRE) mare Heaven Instead, an unraced daughter of Melbourne Cup winner Jezabeel.

Heaven Instead was bought for the Southern Thoroughbreds Breeding Syndicate by Adrian Hancock for $90,000 at the 2011 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale from the Strawberry Hill draft.
Frank Heavens is the second winner for Heaven Instead, who has a yearling colt by Authorized (IRE) and was covered again by Big Brown last spring.

Barnstorming Return For White Roe

August 16 - Promising New Approach (IRE) four year-old White Roe resumed from a winter spell with a barnstorming win at Morphettville on Saturday.

The Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas trained gelding overcame an outside gate and 60 kg, to storm home and win by three-quarters of a length over 1200 metres for Clare Lindop.

A $90,000 Magic Millions Adelaide purchase for his trainer from the draft of Mill Park, White Roe has the overall record of four wins and five placings from 15 starts with prizemoney of $108,940.

He is one of five winners from six to race for former smart metropolitan winning Unbridled’s Song (USA) mare Southern Rose.

Southern Rose has a yearling filly from the first crop of champion European sprinter Dream Ahead (USA).
