Cox Plate Second For Fawkner

Melbourne, October 26 – Outstanding performer Fawkner beat all bar the Irish raider Adelaide (IRE) in the Group I MVRC Cox Plate at Moonee Valley on Saturday.

The seven year-old Reset gelding had the race won for Team Williams everywhere bar the post, failing by a short neck to take Australia’s greatest weight-for-age prize.

Nick Williams offered no excuses for the defeat of Fawkner.

"As you can see by the time they have run, they were only two-10ths outside the record, the field has all finished so close together and that’s why it’s the great race it is,” he said.

"He’s a marvellous horse and we couldn’t be happier with him. He’s run his heart out and he’s met a better one on the day.

"If they meet again I’m sure it will be close again.”

A $70,000 Inglis Premier purchase from the Mill Park draft, Fawkner has won $3.3 million in prizemoney and after finishing sixth in the Melbourne Cup last year, will be given a chance to improve upon that effort on Tuesday week.
